Louise Humphrey of Studio 44 Pilates has been teaching pilates in Leicestershire since 2000. Known by clients and friends as “my Pilates teacher”, Louise can be found most days sporting the latest Sweaty Betty Kit (“obsessed but it is so comfortable!”) taking classes in her local village halls or one to one’s in her home studio. Here she reveals why we should all be doing 10 minute Pilates every day and how she uses the internet to share her message:
What inspired you to set up your business?
I have been teaching Pilates for over 17 years and loving it. Due to the fact that a lot of my clients have children I set my courses up as term time only. But I was finding when we broke for 6 weeks in the summer holiday no one was practising their Pilates and we had to start from scratch every September. As a teacher and for my clients this was very frustrating. So, I came up with the idea of my 10-minute Pilates membership. All the videos are just 10 minutes long of all levels with full instructions throughout the videos. People start Pilates for lots of reasons but usually after an injury so regular Pilates is important to maintain flexibility, mobility and strength to help live normal lifestyles or as for cross training for sports.
What makes your you special and where are you based?
Time is the biggest issue as to why people don’t exercise regularly, either unable to commit to a weekly class or just not having the energy at the end of a working day to get out and do something. 10 minutes is very doable to fit into a day. As a founder member of 10 minute Pilates membership said recently “10 minutes is easier to do than I thought and I do it more often than I thought I would” My local classes are based in Leicestershire.
How do you use social media to help promote your business?
I use social media various ways to try and make people aware of my brand, to get to kn me, like and trust me! So, I post regularly either promotions (Facebook Ads) or Pilates related posts. Find me on Facebook, Instragram and Twitter
What’s the best piece of advice you have been given?
Believe in yourself, work hard and achieve your best.
What has been your greatest challenge?
My naivety of starting an online business. I had no idea! I was lucky when I launched my membership as I had a local client base and it was just before the summer holidays so it started well. Now it is to stay motivated and keep being consistent with my content online. But It’s great to be learning something new!
How do you switch off?
By doing Pilates!! And walking my 6-month-old Lab puppy!
Where do you go on holiday?
As a family our Happy place is Cornwall where we go most holidays. Great to sail, walk the dog and just spend time as a family and with friends.
What lesson do you wish you had learnt at school?
More about real life and business!! (think things have changed since I was at school!)
What app/website/twitter account (other than your own!) would you recommend?
My favourite app at the moment is wordswag it’s great for putting text on photos for Social Media posts. It’s not free but under a £5 so worth it.
Where do you see yourself/your company in five years’ time?
I would like to see my membership growing, having guest instructors to do specialised videos, starting a podcast and just helping the nation to get moving daily!
